An Easy DIY Body Oil to Soothe and Nourish Winter Skin

Wind chill, central heating and freezing temperature – our skin goes through a lot in the winter! Save your skin (and your money) with a DIY body oil you can make at home designed to hydrate and protect skin this season. Body oils are an amazing way to elevate your daily routine, they help replenish and nourish skin, while the optional addition of essential oils helps you relax. The occlusive nature of body oil helps to naturally lock in moisture so you can swap out your lotion and simply pat the below formula in onto skin after your daily bath or shower to seal hydration in. You can also use body oil on dry, irritated winter hands (hello fellow fastidious hand washers), or on cracked cuticles for touch ups between salon visits. Use it as a massage oil for a spa like treatment at home, or add a full dropper to a warming bath to create a luxurious and hydrating experience – Choose your own adventure!

Body oils typically include a combination of carrier oils and essential oils we’ve included skin safe suggestions for both below.

1 - Choose which active ingredients you want:

Customize the essential oils you select to your concerns. We’ve included some popular suggestions below that are safe for use on the skin, feel free to mix and match and add multiple oils

  • Chamomile oil – with gentle healing properties, it acts as a natural anti-inflammatory and helps to calm dry, irritated skin

  • Rose oil – deeply hydrates dry skin. It is another incredibly anti-inflammatory oil and has many healing properties.

  • Tea tree oil – helps calm skin by reducing itching and irritation

  • Jasmine essential oil – not only has an uplifting scent, but it is also packed with antibacterial and antiviral properties.

2 - Choose your oil base:

Once you’ve chosen your essential oils they need to be diluted  – essential oils are very powerful and if used directly on skin they can cause irritation – so please don’t it! To avoid issues you’ll need to properly dilute your essential oils a carrier oil. Some of our tried and tested favorites are:

  • Coconut Oil – an affordable, skin-soothing option.

  • Tamanu oil – an incredible base oil for sunburnt skin due to its ability to promote new skin cells while also being rich in healing properties and essential fatty acids.

  • Cannabis sativa oil – a powerful base oil that is a highly effective moisturizer and provides nourishment while strengthening your skin’s natural barrier.

3 - Mix to combine

You’ll want to use about 20 drops of essential oils to one cup of your carrier oil. Combine all ingredients in a glass bottle and shake well – Keep it sustainable and reuse a (throughly) washed out pasta sauce jar, dropper bottle, or mason jar if you have one. Then use as you please!
