A Step By Step to Giving Yourself a Lymphatic Drainage Massage at Home
Lymphatic Drainage Massage is having a moment with celebrity fans including Ashley Graham, and Alessandra Ambrosio praising the treatment for its wellbeing properties. The practice can be done at home (minus the celeb spa budget) to help depuff, define and detoxify the body, reduce fluid retention, and firm skin. Aside from cosmetic effects Esthetician Alyce Germal says the practice works by “detoxifying the body and stimulating the lymph nodes to help drain toxins”, leading to an improved immune system, increased energy and healthy bowel movements. Additionally it’s a great way to show yourself a little love and move stagnant energy out of the body.
When we take care of ourselves it causes a ripple effect. If we are kind and generous to ourselves, we are better able to serve our community.
How to Stimulate your Lymphatic System at Home
Start by awakening the four areas with the highest concentration of lymph nodes; these are the neck, armpit, abdomen area and groin. Germal suggests “Gently open them by massaging the surface of your skin using extremely light circular movements with your hands or a wooden massager to roll around the area. For the upper body you want to massage the neck right above and around the collarbone, under and around each armpit on both sides. For any lower bodywork massage on both sides where the groin meets the thigh stimulating the lymph nodes to help drain toxins”
Once you’ve woken up those lymph nodes you can start to massage. If you have a body oil or coconut oil on hand now would be the time to apply it. Moving the palms of your hands gently up your legs, arms, abdomen, back or buttocks for a nice massage stroking and gliding hands inwards towards your heart. Ideally, aim for about 10 strokes per area, you can concentrate on one area that needs some TLC or do the whole body. Make sure you drink lots of water to help flush out the system before and after, and it doesn’t hurt to repeat some loving affirmations while you do it.
